INDOCHINA SAILS provides a highly professional service, all matters conducted with shipshape precision, particularly meal times. The ten guest limit allows for a degree of exclusivity and intimacy while on board and personal attention from staff is a keypoint. The food was excellent in our view, each evening meal having 5 or 6 courses of interesting design, taste and presentation. Wine prices were as expected in Vietnam at the higher end but a bottle could be obtained for $ 35 aus easy enough. Our accommodation was superb, all wood lined cabins, a stand alone shower cubicle, and believe it or not, a full size bath with spa function! I can only suggest a larger range of western popular music is provided for we found Whitney Houston and Celine Dion on a continual loop a bit discordant. Being on a boat in the middle of calm and clear bay invites the possibility of swimming but for different reasons this is not allowed. in fact there are only very restricted opportunities for swimming, in designated places. This seems to be dictated by the communist authorities who can penalise operators if customers breach the rules. so don't think about taking a secret dip! Vietnam is much more strictly governed than Europe and I guess this is what slightly detracts from the usually expected free and easy nature of shipboard life elsewhere. all the same this is a fun cruise and we stopped at some great places, caves especially.

We took the three day /two night cruise and would heartily recommend it. Valentine is a smaller boat than many that ply Halong Bay with just five cabins. This guarantees a much more relaxed and personal experience. Cabin was fine with a decent bathroom. The public areas were generous with lots of wood panelling and comfortable spaces to sit in and outside. Perhaps the pictures slightly oversell it, but there was a definite touch of faded luxury. All was pretty clean and shipshape. We enjoyed the food which was all freshly prepared. Chicken was a welcome break from prawns. Drinks were fairly priced. The size of the boat ensures a degree of flexibility and we were at times able to avoid the party boats and boisterous day trippers. The scenery is of course stunning. Tai chi on the top deck at 7.30am was good fun and there were plenty of excursions on offer. A visit to a pearl factory was surprisingly interesting. The boat, like all tourist boats in the area, is painted white - the result, we were told, of a visit by a local governor to Europe who was impressed by the clean lines of the white boats he saw there. The crew of Valentine were delightful. Our guide, " Little Buddha " was a star.

Valentine Cruise has a relatively small boat, with 5 cabins catering for up to 10 passengers. Compared to many of the other larger junk style ships we saw, this led to a cozy, intimate environment where all the passengers could get acquainted with each other and enjoy a personalized experience with the expert support and guidance of the crew. Thanks to Hugh who was available, helpful, humorous and cheerful throughout. The cabins, public areas and facilities were stylish in dark wood, immaculate, and in excellent condition, and the meals were amazing. We took the 3 day/2 night cruise, which I would thoroughly recommend to have time to really relax and enjoy the experience. A lot of thought had obviously been given to the itinerary and timings, which mostly kept us away from the flotillas of other boats, so despite the popularity of certain areas, we never felt crowded by others and had a generally peaceful cruise, so we could enjoy the splendour of the topography with clear views, and the stopping off points without the bustle, walls of selfie takers and lack of awareness of some other groups of travellers. This cruise may seem relatively expensive compared to some of the 'offers' one may see, but it was worth every penny.
